My Ancestry Noah's Ark My Kin-Ch 1: Why Did Allah Make Me in Distress: How Trials Shaped My Spiritual Journey with Allah

Verse: Allah Made Men in Distress

Question: Why Did Allah Make Men in Distress

Life often presents challenges that test our faith and character. For many, these trials come in the form of hardship, illness, poverty, or loss. In Islam, such difficulties are not random misfortunes but purposeful tests from Allah. They reveal whether a person will remain steadfast in faith or stray from the path by following temptations that lead away from righteousness. Chapter 1 explores how Allah uses distress to shape believers, drawing from personal experience and Islamic teachings to show how struggles can deepen our connection with Allah and prepare us for the before and the hereafter.

Understanding Trials as a Test from Allah

Allah, in His infinite wisdom, created humans endowed with free will, granting them the ability to make choices that shape their lives and destinies. This divine gift of free will is fundamental to the human experience, as it allows individuals to navigate the complexities of life, including the myriad challenges and adversities they may encounter. Life’s hardships, encompassing a wide range of difficulties and tribulations, serve as profound tests designed to examine how we respond under pressure and in times of distress. The Quran, which serves as a guiding light for believers, elucidates this concept by stating that humans were created with inherent weaknesses and are often placed in situations of distress. These trials are not arbitrary; rather, they are carefully orchestrated to evaluate the depth of our faith and the strength of our patience.

These trials manifest in various forms, including but not limited to famine, poverty, sickness, hunger and misfortunes. Each of these challenges serves as a unique test of character and resilience. For instance, famine may compel individuals to confront their reliance on Allah for sustenance and support, while poverty can challenge one's sense of self-worth and material attachment. Sickness may test a person's faith in Allah’s plan, while hunger can evoke a deep sense of vulnerability and dependence on divine mercy. In each of these scenarios, believers are faced with a critical choice: to remain steadfast in their obedience to Allah or to succumb to temptation, which often takes the form of following Satan’s footsteps in a bid to acquire what they desire, want, or need through wrongful or unethical means. This dichotomy highlights the constant struggle between the path of righteousness and the allure of sin.

The purpose of these tests is not to inflict punishment or to impose undue hardship; rather, they serve a much more profound and transformative purpose. These trials are fundamentally designed to purify the soul and fortify one's faith. When a believer encounters hardship with patience, resilience, and unwavering trust in Allah, they embark on a journey of spiritual growth and self-discovery. This process of enduring and overcoming adversity is not only a means of personal development but also a pathway to earning immense rewards that prepare individuals for Jannah (Paradise). The Quran reassures believers that those who remain steadfast in the face of trials will be rewarded 10 times fold in the before and the hereafter, thus instilling hope and motivation in their hearts.

Conversely, succumbing to sin during these challenging times can have dire consequences. When an individual allows themselves to be swayed by temptation and strays from the path of righteousness, they risk distancing themselves from Allah’s mercy and grace and eventually being guided by the devil. This disconnection can jeopardize their place in the before and hereafter, leading to spiritual decline and despair. It is crucial for believers to recognize that trials are not merely obstacles to be overcome but are essential components of their spiritual journey. By embracing these challenges with faith and patience, they can cultivate a deeper relationship with Allah, ultimately leading to a more profound understanding of His wisdom and mercy.

Personal Story of Endurance and Faith

A powerful example of this divine test is my own life journey, which has been marked by significant challenges and profound revelations. I was born with several chronic illnesses that have shaped my existence: hypermobility Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), which affects my connective tissues and causes joint pain and instability; Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS), leading to unpredictable allergic reactions and severe fatigue; and Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), which disrupts my blood flow and results in debilitating dizziness and fainting spells. These conditions made me physically different from others and rendered me vulnerable from the very beginning of my life. In addition to these physical challenges, I also have Asperger’s autism, which further complicated my interactions with the world around me and added to my profound sense of isolation and misunderstanding.

As I navigated my childhood and adolescence, the difficulties I faced were compounded by the abandonment of my family. Those who should have been my protectors turned their backs on me, leaving me to fend for myself in a world that felt overwhelmingly hostile. This rejection was not just emotional; it manifested in tangible losses as well. I frequently lost my possessions, unable to move them due to my health constraints, which added a layer of grief to my already tumultuous existence. From the ages of 19 to 40, my life was a continuous struggle as I endured relentless seizures, persistent breathing difficulties, frequent blackouts, personality changes, and extreme sensitivity to sensory stimuli. These challenges confined me mostly to the walls of my home, where all I could do was gain knowledge, write poetry and music, creating a prison of sorts where my spirit often felt trapped to the point I kept wanting to kill myself. Each of these hardships served as a test, challenging my resolve and my relationship with Allah, forcing me to confront whether I would turn away from Him in despair or remain steadfast in my faith.

Despite the overwhelming nature of my circumstances, I made a conscious decision to hold onto my faith. I recognized that the path of least resistance, which often led to sinful choices and temporary relief, was not the solution to my suffering. Instead of succumbing to despair or seeking solace in harmful distractions, I sought healing through prayer, patience, and a deep trust in Allah’s wisdom telling me that I should go to college to become a scientist and I can figure it all out by myself in which I did. I immersed myself in spiritual practices that brought me closer to my Creator, finding solace in the verses of the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). At age of 40, Allah told me to stop taking my medication and that he will heal me and I began to experience remarkable healing—in the traditional sense of physical recovery, and in a profound transformation of my spirit and outlook on life. I found abundance not in material wealth, but in the richness of knowledge, the depth of wisdom, and the unique ability to create prophetic music that uplifted not only my own spirit but also resonated with and inspired others.

This arduous journey taught me invaluable lessons about the nature of Allah’s tests. I came to understand that these challenges are deeply personal, tailored to each individual's journey, and are designed to bring out the best in us if we respond with unwavering faith and resilience. My greatest desire throughout this ordeal was to be healthy enough to enjoy life fully, to listen to my music while driving in the car, to engage with the world around me, and to play with my children without limitations. After decades of struggle, Allah granted me that blessing. The joy of being able to share moments of laughter and play with my children is a testament to the power of faith and the mercy of Allah, reminding me that even in the darkest times, there is always a glimmer of hope waiting to be embraced.

How Trials Strengthen Spiritual Connection

Facing adversity can deepen a believer’s relationship with Allah in several profound and meaningful ways:

  • Increased reliance on Allah

When worldly support fails or challenges arise, believers often turn to Allah for help, fostering reliance on the Creator and building a stronger bond. This reliance nurtures trust and reinforces Allah as the ultimate source of strength, prompting fervent prayer and deepening the spiritual relationship.

  • Growth in patience and gratitude

Hardship cultivates patience and gratitude, teaching perseverance and faith. Trials highlight overlooked blessings, fostering a deeper gratitude towards Allah and encouraging a mindful, thankful life approach.

  • Awareness of life’s temporary nature

Trials remind believers of life's transience, shifting focus from material pursuits to spiritual growth. This awareness encourages prioritizing the relationship with Allah and seeking eternal success in the hereafter.

  • Opportunity for repentance and purification

Difficulties prompt self-reflection, leading to repentance and purification. Facing adversity, believers evaluate actions, seek Allah's forgiveness, and strive for righteousness, strengthening their bond with Him.

  • Strengthening of faith through prayer and worship

Hardship increases devotion, as believers seek comfort through prayer and worship. This devotion provides peace and strength, fortifying faith and commitment to Allah during challenges.

These spiritual benefits not only help believers resist the temptation to sin or take shortcuts that lead away from Allah’s path but also inspire a steadfast commitment to righteousness. Even when life is hardest, the lessons learned through trials encourage individuals to uphold their values and maintain their faith, ultimately leading to a more fulfilling and spiritually enriched life.

Avoiding the Path of Temptation During Hardship

In the journey of faith, believers often find themselves facing various trials and tribulations that test their resilience and commitment. One of the most insidious challenges during these difficult times is the role of Satan, who seeks to mislead and distract individuals, particularly when they are at their most vulnerable. Hardships such as famine, poverty, illness, hunger and emotions can create a fertile ground for temptation, leading individuals to consider actions that are contrary to their beliefs. The pressure to resort to dishonesty, theft, despair, or even the abandonment of one’s faith can become overwhelming as they seek immediate relief from their suffering.

Islam places immense importance on the ability to resist these temptations, as doing so is essential for spiritual survival and growth. Believers are encouraged to remain steadfast in their faith, even when faced with the most daunting challenges. The following principles serve as a guide for navigating through such hardships:

  • Maintain regular prayer and remembrance of Allah

This practice is not merely a ritual; it is a vital connection that keeps the heart engaged with divine guidance and support. Regular prayer, or Salah, serves as a reminder of Allah's presence and mercy, providing comfort and strength to believers. Engaging in dhikr, or the remembrance of Allah, reinforces this connection, allowing individuals to find solace and clarity amidst their struggles.

  • Seek support from the community and righteous companions

Surrounding oneself with positive influences can significantly bolster one’s resolve during trying times. The companionship of righteous friends and community members who share similar values can provide encouragement, accountability, and a sense of belonging. These relationships foster an environment where believers can uplift one another, share their burdens, and remind each other of the importance of faith and perseverance, especially when the temptation to stray becomes strong.

  • Practice gratitude for what remains rather than focusing on loss

In the face of adversity, it is easy to dwell on what is lacking or lost. However, cultivating an attitude of gratitude can profoundly shift one’s perspective. By consciously acknowledging and appreciating the blessings that still exist, believers can foster a sense of contentment and resilience. This practice not only mitigates feelings of despair but also strengthens one’s faith, reminding individuals that even in hardship, there are reasons to be thankful.

  • Remember the rewards promised for patience and perseverance

The Quran and Hadith are filled with verses and teachings that emphasize the immense rewards awaiting those who endure trials with patience and unwavering faith. Believers are reminded that every hardship is a test, and enduring these challenges with a positive outlook can lead to spiritual elevation and divine blessings. Reflecting on these promises can serve as a powerful motivator to remain steadfast and resist the allure of temptation.

  • Avoid despair and hopelessness

Despair can be one of the most dangerous states of mind, leading individuals to lose hope in Allah’s mercy and wisdom. It is crucial for believers to remember that Allah is always present and aware of their struggles. Trusting in His plan and timing is essential for overcoming difficulties. By fostering a mindset of hope and reliance on Allah, believers can navigate their trials with courage and faith, steering clear of the pitfalls of despair.

By adhering to these guiding principles, believers can effectively navigate their struggles without losing their way. Each of these practices serves as a beacon of light, illuminating the path toward resilience and spiritual growth, even in the darkest of times. Ultimately, the journey through hardship can become a profound opportunity for personal transformation and a deeper connection to faith.

Finding Purpose in Pain

Pain and suffering often feel meaningless, leaving individuals in a state of despair and confusion. However, within the framework of Islam, these experiences carry profound and significant purpose. Every hardship that one encounters is not merely a trial to endure but an invaluable opportunity for spiritual growth and development. It is through these challenges that believers can earn the favor of living in Janna and having the mercy of Allah, as they navigate the complexities of life with faith and resilience.

The teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasize this perspective, highlighting that no fatigue, disease, sorrow, sadness, hurt, or distress befalls a Muslim except that Allah expiates some of their sins because of it. This profound statement serves as a reminder that every moment of suffering has a divine significance; it is a means through which believers can cleanse their souls and draw closer to their Creator. The concept of suffering as a form of purification is deeply rooted in Islamic belief, where trials are viewed as tests of faith that can strengthen one’s relationship with Allah.

Moreover, this perspective transforms suffering from a mere burden into a meaningful part of the spiritual journey. Instead of viewing pain as an obstacle, believers are encouraged to see it as a catalyst for personal and spiritual development. It fosters a mindset that promotes resilience and hope, urging individuals to seek lessons in their pain. Each trial can become an opportunity for reflection, allowing one to examine their faith, their values, and their purpose in life. Through this lens, suffering can lead to greater empathy, compassion, and understanding towards others who are also facing difficulties.

Furthermore, the experiences of pain and hardship can be harnessed to inspire others. When individuals share their stories of struggle and the lessons they have learned, they can uplift and motivate those around them. This communal aspect of suffering is significant in Islam, as believers are encouraged to support one another through their challenges. By doing so, they not only find solace in their shared experiences but also create a network of strength and encouragement that can help others navigate their own trials.

Healing and Abundance Beyond Material Wealth

True abundance in Islam is not merely quantified by the accumulation of material possessions or wealth, but rather it is deeply rooted in the attainment of knowledge, the cultivation of wisdom, and the nurturing of a profound closeness to Allah. This spiritual perspective on abundance emphasizes that the richness of one’s life is measured by the depth of one’s understanding and the strength of one’s faith. My personal healing journey serves as a powerful illustration of this profound truth. After enduring decades of illness and hardship, a transformative experience emerged, granting me the ability to create prophetic music. This music, imbued with messages of hope and faith, serves as a beacon of light for others who may be struggling. The gift of creating such music is a remarkable form of abundance that not only enriches my own soul but also extends its benefits to the wider community, fostering a sense of connection and encouragement among listeners. As I reflect on my journey, I recognize that physical healing also came gradually, allowing me to embrace life with renewed vigor and enthusiasm. This newfound vitality has enabled me to engage in activities that I once longed for.

Moreover recognizing that true abundance encompasses not just our physical realities but also our emotional and spiritual well-being, we open ourselves to a fuller understanding of what it means to live a rich and fulfilling life. This holistic approach to abundance invites us to seek knowledge, embrace our spiritual practices, and connect with others, ultimately leading to a life that is not only abundant in material terms but also rich in love, compassion, and shared experiences.

In Conclusion

Every believer faces trials, but how we respond shapes our spiritual destiny. Allah’s tests are designed to reveal our true character and faith to see if we are worthy enough to come to Jannah. By embracing hardship with patience, trust, and devotion, we grow closer to Allah and prepare for eternal success.

Remember that no matter how difficult life becomes, Allah’s mercy is vast, and He rewards those who remain steadfast and patient. Our struggles are not signs of abandonment but opportunities to prove our faith and earn a place in Jannah.
